I am launching a new political blog from within the Mennonite movement in the U.S.A. What this means is that this blog will feature writing and commentary from among folks who self-identify as Mennonite within the United States. The purpose of the blog will be to invite responsive, soulful participation in our national democratic processes.
–Mennonites may love our country deeply while offering clear primary allegiance to the City of God and the way of Jesus Christ.
–Mennonites in the United States have functionally moved from the “sacred village” of our farming communities into the “global village” of urban and online life that involves us deeply in national politics. How can we live into this reality responsive to the Spirit of Christ who moves among us caring for “the least of these”, to do justice, love kindness, and to walk humbly? We want to hunger and thirst for righteousness, and to live beside the river of life which flows through the City of God. On the banks of this river, trees grow, and the leaves of the trees are for the healing of the nations.
–This blog affirms the role of the prophet, as Walter Brueggemann defines that role:
1) to challenge the “royal theology” or the “empire” or the “totalism,” the dominance processes that attempt to claim our full allegiance and to define every aspect of our lives, souls, and futures
2) to prayerfully and actively spot the places where the Spirit is saying “I am about to do a new thing” and to walk with and rejoice in the action of the Spirit wherever this good, gracious, lovely action is spotted.
Good enough. More understandings may be coming from yours truly, as I edit this blog. But that may get us started.
P.S. I invite responses and postings. Only postings that I judge to be compassionate and thoughtful, deeply holding the Spirit of Christ, will be aired on this blog.
